MonkeyKites Griffin 14m (test)... l'arme anti-pétole!!!
En cette période estivale qui rime bien souvent avec de petits thermiques asthmatiques, pas facile de trouver de bonnes ailes en grande taille!
La marque Australienne MonkeyKites s'est déja fait remarqué l'an dernier avec sa Griffin 15m, qui était tout simplement l'une des ailes les + puissantes du marché, tout en gardant un bon comportement et feeling général (depower, maniabilité).
Sylvain Hoceini avait d'ailleurs scoré en speed et en longue distance avec cette grosse aile, qui lui permettait de naviguer quand tout le monde était scotché (puissance), ou encore de tenir + de toile que tout le monde pour aller + vite (depower)...
Et les performances freestyle étaient également au RDV, comme en témoigne cette vidéo d'une session kiteloop en Monkey Griffin 15m... plutôt surprenant, non?
D'ailleurs pour ceux que ça intéresse, il nous reste une Griffin 15m 2007 d'occaz, en état comme neuf (2 sorties), complète, que nous cédons à 449€.
Pour 2008, les Australiens de chez Monkey ne se sont pas endormi, et nous proposent la Griffin 14m, qui est une vraie arme pour s'amuser dans le petit temps...
Plage basse toujours aussi impressionante, mais toujours plus de maniabilité, un feeling en barre très agréable, et un depower énorme qui vous permet de tenir votre aile très loin si le vent monte.
Le magazine on line SBC Kiteboard a testé la MonkeyKites Griffin 14m, parmi 33 autres ailes du cru 2008.
Il en ressort un test excellent, qui met en avant la polyvalence de cette aile convenant à tous les niveaux et à tous les styles de navigation.

The Monkey Griffin is the kite from Down Under that promises to be a do-it-all freeride kite for the masses. It stacks up well against the other value-oriented hybrid SLEs on the market, with good all-around performance and solid safety features.

Bar setup and safety systems
The simple four-line bar has direct 1:1 setup and is colour-coded with soft EVA foam grip. The ultra-long chicken line rolls though a Ronstan pulley at the front-line connection point. Large amounts of trim-line adjustment is easily accessible on the trim-line cleats below the bar and on top of the quick-release trim loop. The safety leash connects below the bar and uses the trim line for total depower.
Key kite features
The Monkey is packed with great features that up the overall value of this package. It has triple-reinforced stitching in critical areas, scuff guards on all leading-edge joints and anti-tangle webbing at the strut tips. A great new courier-style bag folds out to fit inflated struts.
On-water performance
The Griffin is all about value and has performance suitable for all skill levels. The 14 m2 has good low-end power and smooth, predictable flying characteristics. It handles gusts with ease, and total depower comes on within arm’s reach. Bar pressure has been reduced from last year’s model, and it has direct steering with no pulleys on the bar. Upwind ability is above average, with efficient airflow and good angles of attack reached by adjusting the trim. Water relaunch is also above average, and it responds quickly to a steering-line pull. This is a great first-time kite purchase because it has one of the best price-to-performance ratios on the market. Its performance will grow with the rider, and its easy, stable and predictable feel can be enjoyed by all skill levels.
Reality check
This kite was tested with a bar length more suited to smaller kites. We are confident that turn speed and input response from the Griffin will be improved with a longer bar.
Bottom line
Look to the Monkey Griffin for great value and as a kite that can do everything the average rider needs. It has excellent wind range with a good amount of power and upwind drive. Beginners and intermediates will admire its predictability, safety features and water relaunch abilities.
